Single in one country...married in another.

Alright - so we got our permits yesterday as previously mentioned and headed downtown today to the office to apply for our security ID cards. The lady said she needed a letter from the University stating Tim's contract and proof of employment. Okay - we don't have that - so decided Tim will go to school to try and figure out who to get that from and go from there.
Then she asked if we were married. We said yes (clearly labeled in our passports that we share the same last name) and she asked if we had our marriage certificate with us.
And here's the fun part. We said no - it's in Canada in storage - thinking we would not need it once our permits go through because the Embassy of Finland in Ottawa had already taken a copy of it to process our applications.
She then told us that we were not considered legally married in Finland because they need the original document so they can make a copy to have approved, stamped and sealed by their Embassy and so forth.
THERE IS GOOD NEWS. We don't need the marriage certificate to get our security ID cards - whew!
Tim just walked in the door - so hopefully he has good news...which will mean I have to walk back downtown tomorrow *sigh.
